Pratham, an innovative learning organization created to improve the quality of education in India, and ELMS Sports Foundation (ELMS), a non-profit organization focused on accelerating the development of sports in India, especially physical literacy across age groups and geographies, have come together to promote physical and mental wellbeing in school children through Sports Summer Camps in rural India.
Through the collaboration, Pratham and ELMS aimed at increasing awareness of Physical literacy in approximately 1500 villages and introducing the concept of one hour of play and its benefits to the students and community members.
The 15-day Sports Summer Camps were held in the communities during the summer vacation starting from May 10, 2023. The camps took place in seven shortlisted centers in Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh. Each center covers an area of 200 villages – covering close to 1400 villages in total. Digital resources that can be easily used by the participants to access improvement in skills over time were created.
The physical literacy domain expertise of ELMS was used to define the curriculum and activities that were conducted at the village-level camps. And with its mentors and existing teams, Pratham reached out to the villages, who will help identify local sports resource persons in the communities. Each local sports resource person trained youth from neighboring five villages with the help of the Sarpanch.
At the end of the village-level camps, the top 30 or 40 children from those 200 villages were selected from each center for a higher-level camp.
The program has laid an impact on over 15,000 children!
